Sometimes the biggest improvements to a property aren’t massive additions or complete overhauls—they’re solving everyday frustrations that homeowners deal with every single day.
This project started with a set of aging landscape-tie stairs connecting a lower patio area to an upper lawn. While the original staircase had served its purpose for years, it had become increasingly difficult to navigate and no longer matched the functionality of the surrounding outdoor space.
The Existing Challenge
The original stairs were constructed using landscape ties with gravel-filled treads. While durable, the design created several issues over time:
- Narrow walking surfaces
- Steeper rises between steps
- Loose gravel that shifted underfoot
- A layout that felt disconnected from the surrounding retaining walls
- Reduced accessibility when carrying tools, lawn equipment, or outdoor furniture
The homeowners wanted something safer, more comfortable, and visually integrated with the existing landscape.
Planning the New Design
Rather than simply rebuilding the existing staircase, the goal was to create a wider set of timber steps that would:
- Provide larger landing areas
- Improve footing and comfort
- Create a more gradual transition between elevations
- Blend naturally with the existing timber retaining wall system
- Add a clean, finished appearance to the yard
The new design utilized landscape ties as the structural framework while incorporating timber decking boards for the walking surfaces.
Demolition and Preparation
The first step was removing the original gravel-filled staircase.
Once the old ties and gravel were cleared, the area was reshaped and prepared to support the new stair layout. Proper base preparation is one of the most important parts of any outdoor stair project, helping ensure the structure remains stable through seasonal weather changes and years of use.
Careful measurements were taken to establish consistent step heights and comfortable tread depths throughout the staircase.
With the base prepared, construction began on the new staircase.
Each step was built using landscape ties to create a strong retaining structure while timber decking boards were installed across each tread to create a solid walking surface.
The wider treads immediately changed the feel of the staircase. Instead of simply moving people from one elevation to another, the new stairs created a much more welcoming transition through the yard.
Because the stairs were integrated into the existing retaining wall design, the finished project feels like it was always intended to be part of the landscape.
The Finished Result
The transformation is significant.
The old gravel-filled staircase was functional but dated. The new timber staircase provides:
✓ Wider and safer footing
✓ Improved accessibility
✓ Cleaner visual appearance
✓ Better integration with the retaining walls
✓ Increased durability and usability
Most importantly, the stairs now feel like a feature rather than an afterthought.
Outdoor projects often focus on large spaces like patios and decks, but thoughtful improvements to circulation and access can completely change how a yard functions. This staircase now provides a comfortable connection between the patio and lawn while enhancing the overall look of the property.
