At Axle & Armor, we believe the small exterior details of a home deserve just as much attention as the larger renovations. Railings, decks, and outdoor structures are constantly exposed to the elements, and when they begin to fail, they not only affect curb appeal — they can also become a safety concern.
This recent project focused on restoring and rebuilding an aging exterior railing system that had seen years of weather exposure and deterioration.
Starting With the Problem
When we arrived on site, the existing boards were badly weathered. Many of them were rotting, loose, and beginning to fall away from the structure entirely. While the metal framework underneath was still structurally sound, the wood components had reached the point where replacement was the only long-term solution.
Instead of doing a quick patch job, we approached the project with longevity and craftsmanship in mind.
The first step was carefully dismantling all of the failing boards while preserving the existing metal posts and railing system. Once the old material was removed, we sanded down all of the exposed metal components to create a clean surface ready for refinishing and installation.
Custom Woodwork Built to Last
For the replacement boards, every piece of lumber was individually measured and cut to fit precisely within the existing framework.
To improve both durability and appearance, each 2×6 board was beveled with a 30-degree angle along the top edge. This detail serves two important purposes:
- It creates a cleaner, more modern finish
- It prevents water from sitting on flat surfaces, helping reduce future moisture damage and extending the life of the railing system
Projects like this often come down to the details most people never notice — but those details are what separate quality craftsmanship from temporary fixes.
Each board also required custom routing work. We carefully routed a centered trench into the ends of every board so they could slide seamlessly over the metal brackets attached to the posts. This created a clean, secure fit while maintaining the integrity of the original metal structure.
Finishing Touches Matter
Once the railing system was fully installed, we sealed every edge with caulking to help protect against moisture intrusion and future wear.
From there, the entire railing system was professionally painted — including underneath the top handrail — ensuring the project looked fully finished from every angle. Taking the extra time to complete areas that are often overlooked is part of the standard we bring to every project.
The final result completely transformed the appearance of the outdoor space. What was once deteriorating and worn now feels fresh, solid, and built for years of use ahead.
Another Happy Homeowner
One of the best parts of this project was the homeowner’s reaction once everything was complete. They were extremely happy with both the quality of the work and the efficiency of the turnaround.
By the end of the project, they were already discussing additional future improvements with our team — something we always take as the highest compliment.
At Axle & Armor, we take pride in creating exterior renovations that are not only visually clean and modern, but thoughtfully built to withstand everyday use and changing weather conditions for years to come.
If your deck, railing, or outdoor space is beginning to show signs of wear, investing in proper restoration now can save significant repairs later while completely refreshing the look of your home.
